CSAAR Scholarships

The Society usually offers two scholarships for individuals to attend the Classical Summer School of the American Academy in Rome. Typically one scholarship is awarded to a secondary school teacher while the other is reserved for a graduate student pursuing a degree in classical studies.

The Goldman, McGinn, and Sollman scholarships are awarded each year (see information below). In addition, CSAAR tries to give out at least one financial need scholarship – depending upon available funds. Download the application for the CSAAR scholarships. You will need the most recent version of Adobe Acrobat Reader to fill out this form and save it.

The Scholarship Committee of CSAAR chooses recipients for three major awards given to applicants who are admitted to the Classical Summer School of the American Academy:

The Bernard Goldman Scholarship ($5,000) for either a secondary school teacher or a graduate student. This award was established in memory of Professor Goldman, who taught art history for many years at Wayne State University and was a great friend of the Summer School and the American Academy. Bernard's wife, Norma, a teacher and scholar of classics as well as a former president of CSAAR, was instrumental in founding this award.

The Captain William Edward McGinn,Squad 18, FDNY Scholarship ($5,000) for a graduate student. This award was established in memory of "Bill" McGinn, who lost his life responding to the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001. The endowment for this award comes through the generosity of the McGinn family and the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies. As a condition of the award, recipients of this scholarship are required to procure lodging that the ICCS facility while participating in the Classical Summer School.

The Mary A. Sollman Scholarship. Prof. Sollman took her Ph.D. in Classics at Johns Hopkins University in 1932, after which she was a post-doctoral fellow at the American Academy for two years. She was on the faculty of Newcomb College at Tulane University from 1940 until her retirement in 1971. She left an endowment to the Academy for a scholarship for participants in the Classical Summer School.
